Drink Up and Save This Holiday Season

Every time I go to a holiday party and bring a bottle of wine, I wonder: did I bring the right kind of bottle and did I spend enough? Are they going to open it now, put it in the cellar or divert it immediately to cooking wine status? I drink enough wine to be able to tell if a wine is drinkable or not, but I’m definitely not even an amateur wine expert. If you feel the same way, Consumer Report’s wine tasters have given us a little bit of advice for holiday imbibing. Here are a few of their tips:

  1. If you want to bring a “cheap” bottle of wine to a party, put it in a “nice satin or velvet bottle bag”. It will make the presentation more special. (Talk about putting lipstick on a pig!!)

  2. An inexpensive sparkling wine is always a hit at a holiday party. They recommend the Candoni Prosecco.

  3. If you are pouring wine at your party, don’t overpour. Keep the pour at 2 to 3 ounces which will keep the white cool and the red from getting warm while it is being enjoyed. It will also stretch out the wine. :)

  4. If you are going to Thanksgiving at a family or friend’s house, take a Zinfandel (not “white zin”). It is a lighter red wine that goes beautifully with turkey.

  5. If you want to save white or red that is open and left over from a celebration, make sure to put it in the fridge. The fridge will “slow down all biological activity and preserve the wine’s flavor”.

Cheap, Creative Couples Costumes

Well, I’m back to blogging from an extended hiatus and just in time for my favorite holiday, Halloween! My kids are getting old enough (10 and 12) that they have begun to dread this holiday because I always come up with some silly costume to embarrass them at their class Halloween parties (which I ALWAYS attend). Ryan, my 12-year-old, is just glad that I can’t crash his Junior High, since they don’t invite parents on the big day.

In case you’re going to a party, I looked up couples costumes and found some at coolest-homemade-costumes.com that are hilarious and inexpensive to make. I hope these choices make your party going a snap. Don’t forget that you can probably borrow wigs and hats from friends to make these costumes even cheaper. I know I always get asked to share my wigs and hats at Halloween and I don’t mind a bit. :)
