She recently retired to Reno (along with a million other Mid-westerners) and has been trying to figure out how to keep up her beauty regimens (63 and still as vain as ever) and shopping addiction while on a very tight retirement budget. Last time she visited, she asked if she could be a guest blogger sometime, and yesterday she sent me this little beauty tip by email about her efforts to get her teeth whiter. We hope that you get a kick out of our “Tips from Alice” feature. She’s quite a character!
Alice, on home teeth whitening:
“As you know, I have been working on whitening my teeth. I hate that rinse that makes strings in your mouth. I saw a blurb on TV that said baking soda in tooth paste did help with the whitening. So… I decided to just use baking soda on my teeth. Wow! It really whitened them better than anything else I tried. The only thing I did not like was that my teeth felt gritty afterward. So… I put a little toothpaste in my mouth before I started brushing with the baking soda. I got the best of both worlds: whiter teeth and polished, smooth teeth. Grandma Marks always told me that you could brush your teeth with baking soda. I said yuk and never tried it. I guess on this point, I should have listened to my mother.”
Give it a try! If Alice gives it a good rating, it’s probably a winner.

You might be surprised to find out that there is actually a brewing debate over whether and how soon we will run out of space in our landfills. The debate is quite similar to the global warming debate, with the conservatives taking one side and the liberals taking the other. In the great landfill debate, environmentalist claim that the more we increase our landfill size, the more likely we will all get to have landfills in our back yards. The conservatives claim that landfill technology will save us, even as the landfills grow out of control.
I have to land in the environmentalist’s side on this one and for that reason, I have done a little research on what we can do with our extra “stuff,” so that we can decrease the volume that goes into the landfill. It is amazing how many great sites there are for recycling. Here’s a sampling of what I found in a book called The Virtuous Consumer, by Leslie Garrett. I highly recommend this book as a resource for reducing, reusing and recycling:
Dressforsuccess.org – Recycles gently worn business clothing, coats and briefcases.
Wildize.org – Collects hiking boots through their Boots for Rangers program for African rangers who patrol park boundaries and wilderness areas.
Nikereuseashoe.com – Turns your old running shoes (they can be gross and nasty, even!) into athletic surfaces.
Worldcomputerexchange.org – Recycle your PC to be used in a school in a third world country.
Suitcasesforkids.org – This site helps give foster kids a place to keep their stuff as they move from place to place.
Lions International – Donate your used adult and kid’s eyeglasses for use in third world countries.

Well, my wife has done it again. While I was slaving away on a business trip in Europe, she was out buying furniture. Being true to Rubbing Nickels, I successfully talked her out of the ridiculously expensive set we couldn’t afford and instead came home to a zillion boxes from IKEA that I had to put together myself.
I’m beginning to think that each IKEA box comes with a hidden camera just to videotape people trying to put these things together in some kind of European television show aka “Ikea’s favorite home videos”. First, there is the effort of just getting everything home. My son tells me that he and my wife spent a full 25 minutes shoving boxes into the car, to which my wife’s comment was “Did I break anything inside the car?”
